Podcast #35: Epigenetics

Did you know that every somatic cell in your body has the same DNA? Picture your skin cells and white blood cells; they have the same DNA. But why then do they look and function differently from one another? The answer lies in epigenetics. Consider this analogy: if your DNA is like the blueprint for your house, then epigenetics is taking a look at what lights in the house are on and when. Some genes get turned off in some cells, while they’re turned on in others. In today’s episode, we’ll talk about this phenomenon further and explain the roll that epigenetics may also play in diseases like cancer and what can happen if tumor suppressor genes, for example, get turned off. #togetherweweatherthisstorm
