Podcast #24: BRCA Mutations and Prophylactic Surgery with Stefanie Saporito

BRCA mutations significantly elevate a person’s risk for developing breast cancer within their lifetime. In this episode, Stefanie Saporito (a previvor) joins us to talk about the mutation and prophylactic surgery. When Stefanie’s young cousin discovered that she had the BRCA mutation and soon died from breast cancer as a result, Stefanie examined her family history closer and found that both the mutation and the disease were indeed prevalent. Stefanie did genetic testing for herself and found out that she too inherited the mutation. Afraid of a similar fate and with over an 80% chance of getting cancer herself, Stefanie armed herself with knowledge, weighed her options with her provider, and ultimately opted for a prophylactic mastectomy. Hear what she has to say about the mutation, the surgery, and previving.
